According to Estonian Health Insurance Fund about 34 000 people suffer from atrial fibrillation in Estonia. Elderly people aged around 65-85 are at most risk and form 70% of the patients.

The head of the Centre of Cardiology, dr Tiina Uuetoa says that atrial fibrillation is rarely life threatening, but  the disorder increases the risk of trombus which can cause a stroke. Atrial fibrillation increases the risk of stroke about five times and a third of patiens will have a stroke during their lifetime which causes disabilities or death.

Our plan is to first start counseling and treating the people that have recently been identified as atrial fibrillaton patients. We are expecting to receive patients from emergency medical department. The patients are examined and necessray further treatment is provided.
